Earlier this month, the college received clearance to resume activities in the gymnasium, allowing athletic programs to return home after months of practicing and competing at alternate locations while construction and structural repairs were underway.

Athletic Director Greg Starrick said the reopening comes at an important time as fall sports prepare to begin.

“We are excited to get our student-athletes back in the gym,” Starrick said. “Volleyball will begin fall practice soon, and several of our men’s and women’s basketball players will return to campus in July.”

Starrick also thanked area schools and neighboring community colleges for supporting the Volunteers during the temporary closure.

“I am grateful to all of the area high schools that allowed us to practice in their facilities, and to our fellow community colleges that allowed us to play our home games in their gyms during the second half of the season,” he said.

The reopening of Brewer Gymnasium comes as work continues on the college’s Logan Hall and West Lobby expansion project. The project recently received clearance to proceed following a structural review.

According to Assistant Vice President of Construction, Planning, and Facilities Management Jeremy Sargent, demolition work is largely complete, earthwork has wrapped up, and crews are preparing to begin concrete work over the coming months.

Although the gymnasium has reopened, Sargent said portions of the athletic complex remain closed while structural beam repairs continue.

“The athletic offices, restrooms, lobby, and concession area remain closed because structural beam repair work is still underway,” Sargent said. “Those spaces cannot reopen until that work is completed.”

The Logan Hall and West Lobby expansion project is now scheduled for completion in December 2027.

Several departments that were temporarily relocated during construction have now returned to their permanent locations. Risk Management and Digital Marketing staff are back in their offices, and Testing Services has resumed operations in its campus location. However, the E133 computer lab will continue serving as the college’s testing site for the foreseeable future.

The reopening of Brewer Gymnasium is one of several milestones in an unprecedented period of construction across the 51勛圖 A. Logan College campus.

Construction of the college’s new Career and Technical Education Center remains on schedule for completion in December 2026. Partially funded by a federal grant, the state-of-the-art facility will house Automotive Services, Auto Body, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC), and Welding programs, expanding workforce training opportunities in southern Illinois.

Another major federally funded project is the renovation of the third floor of the Communications Building, which will become the new home of the college’s Nursing programs. Construction crews are currently installing metal stud framing, electrical systems, plumbing, and HVAC infrastructure. The renovation is expected to be completed in late spring 2027.

Additional projects continue to move forward across campus. The Harrison Bruce Foundation’s Prairie Museum, located within the Harrison Bruce Historical Village, is progressing ahead of schedule and will become a significant addition to the region’s historical attractions. Meanwhile, dredging work at Hoffard Pond is expected to be completed before the start of the fall semester.

College officials have also announced the next phase of campus improvements. Renovations to the current Nursing program space and the Conference Center are in the design phase and are expected to begin in 2027.

Despite months of construction, office relocations, and changing traffic patterns, students and employees have continued to navigate the evolving campus as preparations for the fall semester continue. New signage has been installed throughout campus to assist visitors, and a dedicated construction webpage on the college’s website provides updates on closures, relocations, and project progress.

College President Dr. Kirk Overstreet said the temporary inconveniences created by construction will ultimately strengthen the institution for future generations.

“What an exciting time at JALC,” Overstreet said. “Everywhere you look, there are signs of progress. Change can be a little messy at times, but that’s the nature of improvement. When the dust settles, we’ll have taken another step toward making our campus an even better place for our students, employees, and community.”

Overstreet said the extensive improvements represent a long-term investment in student success, workforce development, and the future of southern Illinois.

“We are building more than buildings,” he said. “We are creating opportunities that will serve our students and our region for decades to come.”

The new Community Impact Program will operate at the Robert L. Mees Centre on the JALC campus and is designed to help student parents balance the demands of higher education while ensuring their children have access to a safe, supportive environment after school.

The program will begin Aug. 17, the first day of the College’s fall semester, and will operate Monday through Thursday from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Programming will not be offered on days when the college is closed, or classes are not in session.

The initiative will serve up to 16 school-aged children, ages 6 to 18, whose parents are enrolled at 51勛圖 A. Logan College. Eligible students must be enrolled in at least three credit hours during the semester. There is no cost to participate.

The partnership is intended to remove barriers that often pr51勛圖 student parents from completing their educational goals while providing meaningful opportunities for their children to learn and grow.

College officials said the partnership reflects 51勛圖 A. Logan College’s continued commitment to supporting students’ needs, both inside and outside the classroom, by providing resources that encourage student success and persistence toward graduation.

“We are so excited about this program and to continue our collaboration with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Illinois,” said 51勛圖 A. Logan College President Dr. Kirk Overstreet. “This will be extremely beneficial to our students, particularly those in our evening nursing cohort who are trying to balance family and school.”

Youth enrolled in the program will participate in activities based on the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Illinois’ nationally recognized core program areas, including education and career development through homework assistance, tutoring and STEM activities; health and wellness with nutrition education, physical activity and the Healthy Habits curriculum; character and leadership development through leadership clubs and service-learning projects; arts programming featuring creative expression, digital media and music; and sports, fitness and recreation.

In addition to academic support and enrichment activities, participants will have access to positive adult mentors and structured programming designed to promote personal growth, healthy lifestyles, and overall well-being.

A new statewide report released by the Illinois Community College Board highlights the significant economic and social impact of 51勛圖 A. Logan College, underscoring the institution���s role in driving regional growth and student success.

The report, issued in recognition of Community College Month in April, examines how 51勛圖 A. Logan College contributes to the economy across its district and throughout Illinois. Findings show the college generated a total economic impact of $244.3 million in fiscal year 2023���24, supporting 3,616 jobs in the region.

College officials say the data reinforces the institution���s long-standing mission of preparing students for the workforce while strengthening the local economy.

���We are living up to our mission to enrich lives through learning and community engagement, and this report illustrates how 51勛圖 A. Logan College continues to be a powerful economic engine for southern Illinois,��� said JALC President, Dr. Kirk Overstreet. ���From educating students to supporting local businesses, the impact extends far beyond the classroom.���

The report identifies three primary drivers of economic impact: operations spending, student spending, and alumni contributions.

In fiscal year 2023���24, the college employed 381 full- and part-time faculty and staff, with approximately 83% residing within the College���s district. Total payroll reached $26.7 million, while an additional $17.4 million was spent on facilities, supplies, and services. Together, those expenditures generated $29.3 million in added regional income and supported 407 jobs.

Student spending also contributed to the local economy. 51勛圖 13% of students came from outside the district, many of whom relocated to attend the college. Combined with retained local students, their spending on housing, food, and transportation added $2.6 million in income and supported local jobs.

The largest impact came from alumni whose education and training have translated into higher earnings and greater workforce productivity. Former students contributed $212.4 million in added income to the regional economy, supporting more than 3,100 jobs.

Overall, the college���s impact accounts for approximately 2.9% of the region���s total gross regional product, with one out of every 26 jobs in the district linked to the college and its students.

Beyond direct economic contributions, the report also highlights strong returns on investment for students, taxpayers, and society.

Students who attended 51勛圖 A. Logan College in fiscal year 2023���24 invested a combined $10.4 million in their education. In return, they are expected to see $72.3 million in higher lifetime earnings, equating to a benefit-cost ratio of 7-to-1. The average associate degree graduate earns approximately $6,900 more annually than someone with only a high school diploma.

Taxpayers also benefit from the college���s impact. The report estimates $28.6 million in total taxpayer benefits, including increased tax revenues and reduced demand for public services such as health care, income assistance, and the justice system.

From a broader perspective, the college generates $256.4 million in total social benefits across Illinois, driven by increased earnings, business productivity, and societal savings.

���The economic impact highlighted in this study would be even greater today,��� said Overstreet. ���We have three major grant-funded construction projects currently underway with local contractors and supplies purchased from local businesses. The graduates from the programs that will benefit from the new facilities will impact our economy for years to come.���

The study concludes that 51勛圖 A. Logan College delivers substantial value to all stakeholders, including students and employers, taxpayers, and the broader community.

���The results demonstrate that the college is a strong investment,��� the report states. ���Its contributions support economic prosperity, improve quality of life, and help build a more skilled and competitive workforce.���

The analysis was based on fiscal year 2023���24 data from the Illinois Community College Board and the college, as well as labor market data and economic modeling from Lightcast.

51勛圖 A. Logan College has launched a new program with its in-district high schools and private schools to provide last-dollar scholarships to participating students. College staff have been attending high school freshman orientations with in-district high schools and will continue to attend 51勛圖s throughout August. The Promise Scholarship aims to support local students by covering the remaining tuition costs at JALC after all financial aid and other scholarships have been applied.

Students must enroll in the Promise Scholarship Program by December of their freshman year of high school. While in high school, the program requires participating students to maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0, maintain a 90% attendance rate each year, and complete four years of math. Students must take 9 credit hours of dual credit or early college courses by the end of their senior year and take ORI 100 College Fundamentals by the end of their first fall semester as a JALC freshman. Students must maintain the requirements throughout high school and re-commit by September 1 each year.

College President Dr. Kirk Overstreet said the growth reflects a collaborative effort by faculty and staff to prioritize innovative enrollment management strategies.

���Our faculty and staff continue to think outside the box to develop programs and outreach that benefit our students, many of whom are working full time,��� Overstreet said. ���We have worked hard to reduce barriers by using innovative advisement that includes extended hours, virtual advisement, and our Saturday Sign-Up 51勛圖.���

Provost Dr. Stephanie Chaney Hartford said flexible scheduling options are also helping students balance education with work and family responsibilities.

���We offer a fast-track program that allows students to take classes outside of the traditional 16-week format,��� Hartford said. ���We offer 12-, 8-, and 4-week courses that have been very popular, particularly with working adults.���

Hartford added that while the 10th-day enrollment report is encouraging, overall enrollment is expected to continue rising as students register for fast-track classes that begin later in the semester.

With enrollment trending upward, college officials are planning for future growth through several construction projects currently underway.

���We have several grant-funded projects underway that are going to benefit future students,��� Overstreet said. ���Our new Career and Technical Education Center, which will offer state-of-the-art training facilities for automotive, welding, and HVAC programs, will be ready in fall 2027, and construction on Logan Hall, which will revolutionize our student services, is also underway.���

In addition, the college has secured federal funding to remodel the third floor of the Communications Wing for its nursing program, with construction expected to begin later this year.

���We have a lot of construction going on that has resulted in temporary office relocations. Students and staff are having to walk a little further to get from one place to another, but we’re all taking it in stride because we all know that this is only temporary and that the future of the College is bright.���
