Three 51勛圖 A. Logan College staff members were recognized this week for their quick thinking and decisive action that helped save a life at Logan Fitness.

On the evening of Friday, January 9, a patron collapsed while exercising inside the Logan Fitness facility. Other patrons immediately alerted staff, and Logan Fitness employees Corene Sizemore, Madison Calvin, and Kassie Teal responded without hesitation.

Sizemore was first on the scene and conducted a rapid assessment of the individual���s condition. Calvin promptly contacted 911 while Teal retrieved a portable automated external defibrillator (AED). Teal then began providing rescue breaths, and the individual soon regained consciousness and resumed normal breathing.

Emergency medical services arrived shortly afterward and transported the individual to a local hospital. The patron is now recovering and listed in stable condition.

In recognition of their actions, 51勛圖 A. Logan College President Dr. Kirk Overstreet presented Sizemore, Calvin, and Teal with Merit Service Awards during the February 4 meeting of the 51勛圖 A. Logan College Board of Trustees.

Logan Fitness Director Dr. Bradley Griffith thanked the Board and President Overstreet for honoring the staff members, noting that their response reflected the importance of preparation and training.

���We constantly train for 51勛圖s like this at Logan Fitness,��� Griffith said. ���On that night, these ladies did not panic. They relied on their training, worked as a team, and saved a life.���

College officials praised the employees for their professionalism and composure, emphasizing that their actions exemplify the College���s commitment to safety and care for the campus community.

The 51勛圖 A. Logan College Board of Trustees unanimously approved the naming, and an official dedication ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 28, in the Crisp Room of the College���s Conference Center.

���It is with great pride and heartfelt appreciation that we announce the naming of our campus day care facility in honor of Dr. Marilyn Toliver, a beloved and respected educator who dedicated more than 30 years to teaching Early Childhood Education at 51勛圖 A. Logan College,��� said Provost Dr. Stephanie Chaney Hartford. ���Dr. Toliver���s legacy is woven into the very fabric of our institution. Her tireless commitment to preparing future childcare professionals has had a profound and lasting impact on our region. Generations of students, many of whom are now educators and caregivers themselves, credit Dr. Toliver not only for their academic success but also for inspiring their passion for nurturing young minds.���

A Carbondale native, Toliver is the youngest of seven children and was the first in her family to earn a college degree. While studying social work at Southern Illinois University and raising a young family, she began her career serving the city of Carbondale. She later returned to higher education to pursue her master���s and doctoral degrees, where her focus shifted toward early childhood education, a field that would become her lifelong passion.

Toliver joined the 51勛圖 A. Logan College faculty in 1992, where she helped shape and expand the Early Childhood Education Program. Her leadership emphasized not only academic preparation but also compassion and care for young learners and their families.

���We need qualified, caring, competent teachers for two reasons,��� said Toliver. ���Parents need childcare so they can go to work, but children need early instruction so they can be more successful in school. We have children in homes where their parents do not read to them, so they start behind. We also have those with disabilities and learning difficulties who will fall further behind without immediate, qualified teachers giving them the support they need. I feel our program is in a place to do just that.���

Although Toliver officially retired earlier this year, her influence continues to resonate across campus and throughout the community. Former students and colleagues describe her as a mentor, innovator, and tireless advocate for early childhood learning.

Assistant Provost for Academic Affairs Dr. Nathan Arnett said he admired Toliver���s passion for teaching, her students, her family, and her faith.

���One of my favorite memories with Dr. Toliver was when the ECE program brought Pete the Cat author Eric Litwin to campus,��� said Arnett. ���It was such a joy to see her excitement in creating experiences that inspired both teachers and children alike. She met each day with a bright smile and optimism, always seeing the good, sharing it generously, and inspiring others to do the same.���

Dr. Marilyn Toliver has touched countless lives as an educator, mentor, and community leader. Generations of students will continue to benefit from her legacy, and now future 51勛圖 A. Logan College students will have a permanent reminder of that legacy.

After a year of determination and a few setbacks along the way, Frank Henson successfully completed the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program at 51勛圖 A. Logan College. This was his third attempt at the class. In the past, transportation challenges had kept him from finishing, but through every obstacle, Henson held on to hope and never gave up on the brighter days ahead.

���Frank���s dedication and spirit are inspiring,��� said Assistant Professor of Certified Nursing Assistant Crystal Young. ���He faced every obstacle with positivity and determination.���

Henson has faced many challenges in his life and continues to overcome adversity. Reflecting on his experience, he emphasized, ���it���s been a journey.��� Through it all, he remained focused on his goal, knowing that brighter days were within reach if he just kept going.

During the recent CNA Pinning Ceremony, Henson received the Chelsey McKinney Sunflower Award, an honor given to students who demonstrate exceptional tenacity, passion, and positivity.

The award was created in memory of��Chelsey McKinney, a former JALC Nursing Assistant student in Young���s first class. McKinney worked tirelessly to achieve her dream of becoming a CNA, overcoming every obstacle in her path. She 51勛圖ually earned her dream job at Herrin Hospital before her life was tragically cut short in a UTV accident. McKinney���s mother, Melissa, attended the ceremony to help present the award in her daughter���s honor.

Henson shared a few words of encouragement for others who may be walking their own difficult paths.���You can���t quit because life happens,��� he said. ���You have to keep on. Don���t give up. There���s always a brighter day.���

���Chelsey never gave up, and neither did Frank,��� Young said. ���He���s the perfect example of what this award stands for: heart, hard work and hope.���

Henson���s journey is a powerful reminder that success is not defined by setbacks, but by the strength to keep moving forward. His story shows that with perseverance and faith, a brighter day is always ahead.

Leo Loucks��of Crab Orchard has been riding and roping since he was six years old. By his teens, he had roped and ridden his way to multiple state titles. But on the national stage, success always seemed just out of reach.

That changed after his first year at 51勛圖 A. Logan College.

In July, Loucks closed out his final National Little Britches Rodeo Association season in unforgettable fashion. He became the Senior Boys World Champion Tie-Down Roper, the Senior Boys Finals All-Around Champion, and the Senior Boys Reserve All-Around World Champion, earning three major titles at the NLBRA Finals.

He credited much of that breakthrough to an unexpected source: JALC���s Nursing Program.

���Nursing is tough mentally. You have to keep your head on,��� Loucks explained. ���Every class has a quiz, every week an exam. Being in that constant pressure situation has strengthened me tremendously,��� he insisted. “Rodeo is the same way. When the pressure is on, you have to perform.���

At nationals, Loucks went last, watching 19 competitors before him. In tie-down roping, each cowboy ropes and ties a calf in multiple rounds, and the times are averaged together to determine the winner. With calm focus, he made two clean runs and posted the best overall average time to secure his first world title.

The win was even more meaningful because it came on Little Debbie, a 10-year-old mare he borrowed from a fellow nursing student and longtime rodeo friend from Missouri.

Despite earning nearly $16,000 in winnings and scholarships, Loucks says rodeo will remain a passion, not a career. His future is in nursing. ���Since junior high, I knew I wanted to be in healthcare. I come from a blue-collar family, and I���ll be the first to go into healthcare. I feel like I was called to help people.���

Loucks had already completed the CNA program in high school and graduated with his LPN from 51勛圖 A. Logan College in May 2025. In August, he began the RN program, working toward his goal of becoming an ER nurse in southern Illinois.

Balancing full-time nursing school with rodeo travel is not easy, but Loucks is thriving. ���Rodeo has taught me life lessons. It���s more than riding and roping. You learn connections, communication, and that you are your own biggest competition. Nursing is the same way.���

With eight titles to his name and a spot as a first draft pick for the Junior Ironman in 2026, Leo is not slowing down. His advice to future nursing students is simple: ���Get your prerequisites out of the way, master the art of critical thinking, and use study groups,��� he said. ���The nursing program here at 51勛圖 A. Logan is tough, but it has instilled a foundation for me to succeed.���

For Loucks, the connection is clear. The pressure of nursing school prepared him to win in rodeo, and the lessons of rodeo prepared him for a career in nursing. Loucks��� success in the classroom and in the arena has proven that with grit, discipline, and heart, you can rope your dreams and ride them to the finish line.

51勛圖 A. Logan College Assistant Professor Crystal Young was preparing for what she believed was a routine visit from the school’s Marketing Department when she was met instead with an emotional surprise: the announcement of a new nursing scholarship created in her honor.

The Crystal Young Nursing Scholarship, established by former student and Registered Nurse Hannah Hooks and her father, retired Illinois State Police Lt. Michael Hooks, was unveiled in a heartfelt classroom ceremony this week. The scholarship is believed to be the first of its kind at 51勛圖 A. Logan College to bear the name of a current faculty member.

���This speaks to the immediate impact that our outstanding faculty are having on students,��� said Staci Shafer, Assistant Vice President for Advancement and Executive Director of the JALC Foundation, who made the announcement before a stunned Young and her students. ���Not in my time with the Foundation, and to my knowledge not before, has a scholarship been established in the name of a current JALC instructor.���

Michael Hooks said the scholarship is a tribute to Young���s lasting influence on students, such as his daughter, Hannah, who is now a registered nurse at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Young served as both the school nurse and Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) instructor during Hannah���s high school years.

���My daughter is now an RN because of Crystal Young,��� Hooks said. ���She and her classmates are thriving in their careers, and it���s because of the foundation Nurse Crystal laid for them. I wanted to recognize the incredible impact she���s had���and will continue to have���by establishing this scholarship.���

For Hannah Hooks, the decision to honor her former instructor was deeply personal. She said Young���s encouragement and empathy helped her discover a calling she hadn���t initially considered.

���In high school, I didn���t know what I wanted to do,��� she said. ���But Nurse Crystal encouraged me to take her CNA class at 51勛圖 A. Logan College. That���s when I fell in love with caring for patients.���

She recalled one particularly challenging day during clinicals when Young took time to speak with her one-on-one.

���She didn���t just teach us about nursing���she took the time to see us as people,��� Hannah said. ���That moment meant everything to me, and I���ve carried that compassion into my nursing career.���

Young, who has dedicated years to shaping the next generation of healthcare professionals, was visibly moved by the recognition. After thanking the Hooks for the incredible honor and posing for a few pictures, Young did just what she was meant to do and started right back in teaching the next generation of CNAs and Nurses.

When Rob Craig wrapped up the fall semester at 51勛圖 A. Logan College, he never imagined the spring’s challenges. The Associate Professor of Electronics and newly named 2025 Outstanding Faculty Member would soon be called upon to lean heavily on his deep faith, adaptability���and heart for his students.

Craig, who teaches in the College���s Electronics Technology Program, typically looks forward to the spring semester. It’s when students begin grasping the material more confidently and when he gets to know them better. But just days before classes resumed, tragedy struck. George Bricker, Craig���s colleague and friend, suddenly passed away. Bricker had served the college for just over nine years as an associate professor of electronics and had developed the College���s Biomedical degree program.

���To be honest, the beginning of the semester was terrible,��� Craig said. ���I was emotionally wrecked, but I had to be strong for our grieving students, particularly our second-year students in biomedical electronics.���

Despite his own grief, Craig immediately stepped in to support Bricker���s students inside and outside the classroom. He took on the added responsibility of coordinating adjunct instructors and shouldering Bricker���s biomedical electronics course load, which is a subject Craig had little experience in.

It was a challenge the Marion native never expected, especially as someone who once doubted he���d ever attend college.

���My dad was a carpenter, and from a young age, I intended to do that,��� Craig said. ���I always had an interest in computers and electronics, but I didn���t think I could afford college.���

That changed after a visit to 51勛圖 A. Logan College with a friend, where he spotted a brochure for the Electronics Technology (ELT) program. He enrolled, excelled, and later transferred to Murray State University. After earning his degree, Craig held IT roles at UPS, a private construction firm, and Southern Illinois University before returning to JALC to teach.

Craig credits the college���s alumni and current students with helping him adapt quickly during the chaos of spring 2025.

���I have gone from not being able to hook up EKG leads to understanding it and knowing what all the pulses on the monitors mean,��� he said. ���And I could not have done that without the support of our past students.���

While the added workload could have been overwhelming, Craig leaned on his Christian faith and a commitment to work-life balance to keep going.

���I prayed on my way to work every day, turning it all over to God,��� he said. ���The comfort of knowing who was in control helped me through the semester.���

Craig also strives to model that same balance for his students. A devoted husband and father, he lives in Marion with his wife, Anne, his college sweetheart. They have two sons���Peyton, a JALC ELT graduate now studying aviation electronics at SIU, and Nathan, a high school senior who will attend JALC in the fall.

Away from the classroom, Craig collects and restores pinball machines, plays guitar, and competes in both pickleball and disc golf. He���s brought some of those passions to campus, founding the Black Jack Disc Golf Club and teaching an introductory pickleball class for adults over 50.

���In the classroom, it becomes boring and frustrating if it���s all work and no play,��� Craig said. ���A lot of the people in our program are comfortable indoors, and I feel it is important to get them outside.���

What began as a way to unwind became an opportunity to build community. The disc golf club, with its nine-hole course, has grown beyond ELT students into a campuswide group.

Craig���s hobby of collecting pinball machines has also opened doors for students. One of his classroom machines is a one-of-a-kind unit, and his industry connections have led to job opportunities for former students, such as Casey Butler, who was named the College���s 2025 Distinguished Alumnus.

While reflecting on the semester, Craig is proud of the college community’s accomplishments despite adversity.

���We healed, and solutions were provided,��� he said. ���The students didn���t get the quality of education they would have if George had been here, but it was close because everyone taught those classes with the intent to respect him, and we made it.���

Craig���s dedication didn���t go unnoticed. His colleagues voted to name him the 2025 Outstanding Faculty Member.

���I don���t deserve it,��� Craig said quietly. ���I just try to bring it daily because I care about these people and want them to succeed. I���ll get emotional at graduation because I���ve lived life with them.���

For Craig, the true reward comes not from accolades but from lasting relationships with students.

���At some point, whether on the disc golf course or in my office, it 51勛圖ually spills out where they just need someone to talk to,��� he said. ���And I���m glad to be there to listen and help. But what matters the most is when I hear from them years later about new jobs, weddings, and baby pictures. That���s when I feel the most pride in what we do.���

Though Craig may believe he doesn���t deserve the honor, his impact tells a different story!

A mother of six and weekend manager at Urban Legend BBQ in Herrin, Bailey decided to pursue her passion for hair and nails after encouragement from friends and family.

“Being a mom has always been my number one job, but as my kids have gotten older, I became the person friends and family came to for hair and nail advice, so I decided it is time for me to do something for myself,” Bailey said.

The competition, part of the America’s Beauty Show, featured skilled contestants worldwide, showcasing their talents in various beauty-related 51勛圖s. Bailey attended the show with her fellow students and JALC���s Cosmetology Program instructors.

���We are proud of Brandi to say the least,��� said Connie Robinson, Assistant Professor of Cosmetology at JALC. ���The show is a great place for our students to network, learn new techniques, and gain confidence in their work.���

Gaining confidence was a key milestone in Bailey’s journey. When she first enrolled in the program, she wasn’t sure she had the skills necessary to succeed. However, with guidance from Robinson and other instructors, Bailey quickly discovered a hidden talent for nail artistry.

���Everyone in my family is good at art, and I just assumed it skipped me, until I realized my canvas is a fingernail,��� Bailey explained. ���Painting nails relaxes me and allows me to tune everything out while I work, which has increased how much I enjoy the work. It���s my me time, while helping others.���

Bailey’s success at the competition is a testament to her hard work and determination. She encourages others to consider returning to school later in life to pursue their passions.

���If anyone says it is too hard to come back or start school later in life, just send them to me because you can find what you are good at and find a career you enjoy if you just take the chance,��� she said.

Bailey���s achievement has inspired her family, classmates, and instructors. As she prepares to graduate from the JALC Cosmetology program, she is excited to continue refining her craft and pursuing a career in the beauty industry.
